This vegan ‘Snickers’ smoothie bowl is a deliciously creamy blend of avocados, dates, and velvety melted chocolate, topped with chopped mixed nuts, more melted chocolate, and salted caramel sauce. Oh, and there’s a banana too, for good measure!

I’m going to be completely honest here, and say I’ve never really seen the point in smoothie bowls, barring having something pretty to share on Instagram; however, having spoken to several customers at Beet Bar, I’ve come to realise that far from being frivolous fripperies for people with far too much time on their hands, smoothie bowls are actually a really good excuse to have pudding for breakfast.

Or lunch.

Or supper.

Or any time of day. Or night.

OK, hardcore smoothie bowl aficionados may not approve of this attitude but really, c’mon, let’s be honest here, smoothie bowls are totally ninja puddings.

Amirite?

Somewhere between a semifreddo and a shake, smoothie bowls can be incredibly filling, especially if you tart them up with some fruit, nuts, seeds, and other healthy gubbins.

Naturally, it goes without saying that you can feel smugly righteous when you have one.

Doubly so if you Instagram it before eating

Triply so if you keep everyone else at the table waiting while you Insta your bowl.

Fnar fnar.

But wait… if you’re anything like me, sometimes you don’t want smugly healthy food, no matter how delicious it may be. Sometimes you want something that just screams indulgence, right? Well guess what? With my ‘Snickers’ smoothie bowl, you can have both.

This is not a drill folks.

S*** just got real.

I actually got the idea for this smoothie bowl while going through some photos for a post about Mae Hee: I was looking through the food pics I’d taken, and remembered that it was while living there that I first came across smoothie bowls. Like so many foods now hip and cool in the West, smoothie bowls were popular in Northern Thailand, particularly Pai, long before I began to see them on Insta.

Of course, Thailand being Thailand, there is a pervading love of all things sweet, and one of the bowls I vividly remember (but didn’t have because they weren’t vegan) was chocolate fro-yo and banana split. With lots of squirty cream.

While sorting through my Pai photos, inspiration struck… what would a Snickers-type smoothie bowl be like?

I could make it with chocolate avocado pudding, chopped nuts, and my salted caramel sauce. And bung a banana on top for added healthiness.

Okay, okay, that’s a bit of a fib; by the time I’d constructed the bowl, it looked a bit bare on top, so I added the banana to conceal its nekkidness.

And guess what?

It was totes amazeballs.

(Yes, I just said that. I’m so hip now.)
